Neville keeps Gryffindor's sword for two days. He's never felt so brave before, or at least, has never quite believed in his own courage. He's not like other Gryffindors.
Finally, he hands it to Professor McGonagall. She thanks him, and brings the sword to the Headmaster's office, gesturing for Neville to follow.
"This sword chooses very few," she says. "You should be proud, Mr. Longbottom."
"I am."
She smiles kindly. "Then you should also realise that you don't need this to prove your bravery."
She puts the sword in its case, where it will remain safe until it's needed again.
